ON THE SHELVES

WATERCOLOR WORLD

A New Spirit • HENRY OSSAWA TANNER, a turn-of-the-19th-century African-American painter, gained international respect as a modern artist.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH • An artist-in-residence regular in national parks across the U.S., Jessica L. Bryant delights in reaching and revealing rare views of iconic places.

OUTLAND MEMENTOS

Meet the Artist

Artist’s Toolkit • SURFACE: Most often, Bryant uses Arches 140- or 300-lb. cold-pressed paper and sometimes Fabriano soft-pressed paper.

Lakeside Interlude • Tubbs Hill is a 165-acre natural area located in the heart of downtown Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, just a five-minute walk from my front door. I spend a lot of time there and am a board member of the Tubbs Hill Foundation, a nonprofit that works to protect this national treasure.

UNTAMED NATURE • Unique textural backgrounds set the stage for Katherine Weber’s inventive depictions of the natural world.

Miniature Painting

Embracing NEW DIRECTIONS • In the short time that artist JUNWEI DAI has been painting in watercolor, he has pushed himself toward new, ever-changing modes of expression.

In the Studio

Dream Dali • Dai worked on Arches 300-lb. watercolor paper and used Holbein watercolors and an assortment of brushes to paint this dreamlike landscape.

The Best of 2021 (in Watercolor) • Each year, it’s a joy to bring together the winning paintings from watercolor societies around the country and revel in the unique talent on display. This year’s collection of standouts is a diverse, and sometimes somber, showcase of work that demonstrates the visual and emotional potential in the medium.

Juror Tips

Let It Flow • YUPO paper creates both a unique challenge and the opportunity to completely transform elements of a painting during the creative process.

Layering Color on YUPO • I used this process to create the layers in the subject’s jacket when I painted Behind the Shades (page 57).

Realizing a Range of Texture • Diversify textures to create details, convey mood and build atmosphere in a painting.

Signs of Spring • Follow my process step by step as I use texture to create details and build atmosphere in a painting.

What is one of your favorite ways to create visual texture in a watercolor painting?
